Strengthening the political participation of Palestinian women

25.02.2016 / Created by (EMWF)

Although Palestinian women have always had an effective role in the Palestinian struggle on the ground, their political participation and representation in political decision making positions is still low and they are usually given ministerial portfolios in line with the social role scheduled for women like: education, social affairs, Women’s affairs, tourism, or culture. Whilst, on the other side, there is a full monopoly of men for the sovereignty, power and decision making. For these reasons, the association has worked on a campaign for raising the percentage of women´s representation in political decision making positions, to reach 30% as a minimum, within senior parties´ bodies. The petition could get the approval of 13 Palestinian political parties, to increase the proportion of representation of their commitment and sign a private document to adhere to this ratio. Furthermore the association also worked on collecting signatures for the approval of this percentage from citizens and public opinion.

This practice was identified within the framework of the pilot action of mobilization of equality actors on local level in the Northern and Southern regions of Palestine in 2015. This action is part of the Axis 1 "Strengthening the capacity of equality actors” of the project “Women for the future in the Mediterranean” funded by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development and the project “Developing Women Empowerment” labelled by the Union for the Mediterranean.
