Soulaliyates women' s right to ownership and enhancing their role in local governance.

15.07.2015 / Created by (EMWF)

Despite the problem of illiteracy among Soulaliyates women, the Fédération de la Ligue Démocratique des Droits des Femmes - Beni Mellal sought to organize them in an independent association. The aim was to create women leaders, to empower and inform them about advocacy, International conventions and constitutional legislations. A feminist movement was created which has strong bonds with social surrounding (business, associations, media, etc.). Many meetings with the authorities were held and positive promises were obtained for the right of Soulaliyates women to ownership. Also the association of Soulaliyates women was officially recognized and received in regional and local dialogues.

The successful practice aims at organizing and empowering Soulaliyates women and creating women leaders who advocate for the right to ownership and to their basic human rights. Indeed, Soulaliyates women suffer discrimination for the lands (which belong to Soulaliyates tribes) are only for the use of men due to unjust laws and male chauvinist mentality and discriminatory traditions.
