This initiative has been established to monitor sexual harassment against women and girls in Egypt. It aims to: shed light and raise awareness on practices that violate women’s rights through periodical reports issued; mobilize community to combat these practices and to advocate for providing enough legal protection for women and girls against sexual harassment. In order to achieve these goals, the campaign uses voluntary network of youth in all Egypt and it involves young people as part of the problem’s solution.
Major activities of the initiative include: monitoring and reporting, awareness raising campaign, issuing press releases, building constituencies, providing health and legal support for victims as well as advocacy campaigns. Moreover, ACT edited a periodical report where 61 women and girls victims of sexual harassment explained their stories. Through this successful practice, rates of victims’ reporting to police have been raised and the issue of sexual harassment is being discussed on a wide range through media.
This practice has been identified within the framework of the CSO WINS project "Capacity-building in the Southern Mediterranean to Open Policy Dialogue and MonitoringforWomen IN Society"with the support of the European Union’s Neighborhood Civil Society Facility.
This platform is part of the Axis 1 "Strengthening the capacities of equality actors" of the Priority Solidarity Fund "Women for the future in the Mediterranean" funded by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and led by the European Institute of the Mediterranean, in the framework of the project “Developing Women's Empowerment” labelled by the Union for the Mediterranean.
