30.10.2018 / Created by (EMWF)

The term Gender Based Violence (GBV) includes any harmful act that affects or is likely to affect a woman, a man, a girl or a boy whether physically, sexually or psychologically or causing them suffering because of their gender.

It includes, but it is not limited to, sexual violence, domestic violence, human trafficking, forced marriage or early marriage, forced prostitution, sexual exploitation and abuse, and deprivation of resources, opportunities and services.

This resource, from the European Institute for Gender Equality, includes the legal definitions of different types of gender-based violence used in EU Member States, according to their legal terminology and national legislation.
