Gender equality is enshrined in the Irish Constitution. The Irish government, through the Gender Equality Division of the Department of Justice and Equality, is responsible for increasing the role of women in decision-making, including political life, and for increasing the number of elected women through candidate quotas. It is from this perspective that the national legislation and the Division were established to fight against gender-based discrimination.
