By acknowledging the need to place the issue of women and science on its political agenda, the Commission has set up a group of national representatives responsible for this subject within the Member States as well as the partner countries of the November 1999 Framework Programme. This group met for the first time in Helsinki. It is currently known as the "Helsinki Group on Women and Science" and is an important discussion forum on national policies as well as a space for the exchange of experiences.
This platform is part of the Axis 1 "Strengthening the capacities of equality actors" of the Priority Solidarity Fund "Women for the future in the Mediterranean" funded by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and led by the European Institute of the Mediterranean, in the framework of the project “Developing Women's Empowerment” labelled by the Union for the Mediterranean.
