Lebanon
Based in the South of Lebanon, Tiro Association for Arts is an NGO that relies on volunteers to create free and independent cultural spaces in Lebanon. To that end, Tiro carries out various cultural activities, including International theatre, film and musical festivals, theatre workshops, film shows and exhibitions. Underlying Tiro’s actions is the belief that culture, and arts can bring people together, belonging to different social groups, and that is why the association strives to engage everyone in different creative and artistic activities.
Since 2014, the association has rehabilitated Cinema Al Hamra and Cinema Rivoli in Tyre, and Cinema Stars in Nabatieh; it has established the Lebanese National Theatre and launched several festivals: the Lebanese International Theatre Festival, the Lebanese International Short Film Festival, and the Tyre International Music Festival.
Ever since its creation, Tiro Association for Arts has included gender equality and women’s rights amongst its core values. The association has carried out theatrical performances on gender-related topics, such as: women’s freedom, their societal struggles, rape and nationality rights. They also produce films revolving around gender equality.
Every year, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Tiro organizes the Lebanese Theatre Festival for Women - Monodrama, which is an international festival tackling gender issues in the world.
