In cooperation with Sout Al Arab (Voice of the Arabs) radio station and with support from the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF), the Egyptian Centre for Women’s Rights (ECWR) launched a new radio show entitled "Participation" with the aim of promoting the constitutional provisions which grant women 25% local councils’ seats.
The show also intends to raise awareness regarding the importance of women’s engagement and participation in public life, through the radio which is considered one of the most important outreach tools.
The show was launched at the beginning of March 2019 given the symbolism of this month during which Egyptians celebrate International Women’s Day (March 8), Egyptian Women’s Day (March 16) and Mother’s Day (March 21).
The Show focuses on the development of women’s leadership, and on building young women and girls’ capacities in terms of leadership, auto-development and team work. It also tackles important issues that illustrate the differences between the role played by parliament and local councils, whether elected or executive. The program also highlights prominent female community figures and former members of local councils to showcase their achievements and success factors to inspire other women as well as men.
This cooperation is the second of its kind as Sout Al Arab radio station had previously supported ECWR’s efforts to improve the status of Egyptian women through another radio show entitled "She and its Sisters" which was broadcasted in Ramadan in 2016. This show was followed by a TV program entitled "Tales of Nihad" whose 3rd season is currently broadcasted.
The radio show “Participation " is aired daily during the month of March at 10:10 am and is presented by Ms. Nihad Abul-Qumsan, Director of the ECWR.
