Mobilizing the community to promote women's participation in the local councils

Building Bridges Association (BBA) will conduct a project under the pilot mobilization action of gender equality actors which it conducted as the leader of the local cluster of gender equality actors© (Cycle 1). BBA conducted the pilot action in the Irbid Governorate and focused on women's participation in local councils.

Through literature review, focus groups and interviews with civil society organisations, local leaders, women members of the city councils and local authorities BBA and the other members of the local cluster have analysed women’s presence in city councils at Arid Liwa Al Koura, especially in terms of political participation.

After identifying the factors and challenges affecting women’s participation in city councils and while the next municipal elections are expected to take place in 2017, a project was designed in order to allow women to play a more effective role in the society development and growth.

Through awareness-raising activities and community initiatives engaging activist women, community leaders, youth, and municipalities’ members, the project will support women’s access to the municipal councils. In addition to that, private sector and media representatives will be actively involved in order to provide support and communicate on the initiatives.

This project follows the mission of the Foundation to encourage women’s empowerment. It is one of the fieldwork projects developed within the Axis 1 "Strengthening the capacity of gender equality actors" of the project “Women for the future in the Mediterranean”, funded by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development (MAEDI) and the project "Developing Women’s Empowerment" labelled by the Union for the Mediterranean.
