Debate on the report Women in the Mediterranean and the progress of gender equality

The presentation of the Foundation’s monitoring report, entitled "Women in the Mediterranean. First monitoring report of the Euro-Mediterranean Women's Foundation of Ministerial Conferences" was held at the Association Santé Sidi El Houari, in the renovated Palace of Bey. This meeting brought together national elected: Ms. Aïcha Chadjaa (Member of the Parliament); regional politicians, such as Mr. Benjelloun Boualem (Vice-President of the Prefecture of Oran), and Ms. Houria Chikhaoui; former judges, such as Mr. Mansour Kedidir as well as local councilors, such as Ms. Cherif Lahouaria, from the People's Municipal Assembly of Bir El Djir.

Several women's rights associations, such as the Iqra Association and “Femmes Algériennes Revendiquant leurs Droits – Fard” attended the debate as well as children and minorities’ rights associations, such as the Intissar and Sanabil Errahma Association. All participants, including young people and inhabitants of Oran, were made aware of the women’s situation in the social and economic level. This debate was taken by Ms. Nadia Ait Zai, who is the author of the monitoring report’s article about Algeria. Ms. Khadija Driss, president of the Association Femmes en Communication (FEC) Oran, concluded by highlighting the continued mobilization in favor of gender equality, with the creation of the next shelter center of women victims of violence in Oran.

This presentation was co-organized by the Foundation, FEC Oran and the Centre d’information et de documentation sur les droits des enfants et de la femme (CIDDEF) with the financial support of DiMed (Interministerial Delegate for the Mediterranean) of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, and the project “Developing Women Empowerment” labelled by the Union for the Mediterranean.
