The role of women in the governance and municipal councils in Irbid

In August 2015, Building Bridge Association (BBA) has opened a dialogue between equality actors and the media on the obstacles faced by women in municipal elections and also in the municipal workplace. This action took place at local level in Irbid, a remote area of the capital. In addition to focus groups and interviews with the Ministry of Municipalities, a representative of the Women's Council and a woman mayor, a study on women's participation in the local governance was conducted.

The process culminated with a meeting of all the actors on 22 December, 2015 in Liwa Kore, Irbid, to discuss the results of the study, and make recommendations in order to promote the presence of women in the local governance. The event was attended by 40 people including representatives of the private sector, local media and associations from Alkora, Bani Kinana and Qasab.

These activities have created a debate on women's participation in public life and, especially, have increased awareness among the media and the general public, including men. The study also highlights the obstacles faced by women in political participation at local level and the women’s transformative leadership when they are in decision making positions.

Through this pilot project, BBA has launched a network of governmental and nongovernmental actors on the role of women in municipalities and it allowed female potential candidates and elected women to express their views as well as to exchange their experiences. This action is part of the Axis 1 "Strengthening the capacity of equality actors”, of the project “Women for the future in the Mediterranean” funded by  the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, and the project “Developing Women Empowerment” labelled by the Union for the Mediterranean.
