Strengthening the political participation of women: debates in Giza

The ACT Centre and its partners have adopted a participatory approach and media mobilization throughout the pilot action between July and December 2015. The initiative is part of the Axis 1 "Strengthening the capacity of equality actors”, of the project “Women for the future in the Mediterranean” funded by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development and the project “Developing Women’s Empowerment”, labelled by the Union for the Mediterranean.

Two introductory workshops on the objectives of the pilot action and its approach, four roundtables and a presentation conference of the current situation on women’s political participation were organized. These activities helped to gather equality actors from different backgrounds and to lead a collective reflection on the reasons for the marginalization of women in political life. In terms of research, the pilot action contributed to evaluate the involvement of women in political life, from a gender perspective. The added value of this overview focuses on the women’s attitudes and representations in relation to their obstacles to participate in political life.

This research work and networking at the local level opens the way for future initiatives in favour of women's political participation and the strengthening of gender equality. One of the conclusions was that advocacy effort must be made to promote the level of local authorities’ involvement and strengthen networking among governments, civil society and the media’s actors.
