Mobilization of equality actors in the region of Mount Lebanon

The National Committee for the Follow up of Women's Issues (CFUWI) has set up a pilot action of mobilization of equality actors in the region of Mount Lebanon on the participation of women in public and political life. The action is part of the Axis 1 "Strengthening the capacities of actors working for gender equality", of the project Women for the future in the Mediterranean, funded by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development and the project “Developing Women’s Empowerment”, labelled by the Union for the Mediterranean.

The meetings, which were held in Beirut Ain El Remaneh and in Metn - Bhamdoun, on 13 November 2015 and in Iklim – Katermaya, on 27 November, mobilized more than a hundred people. Their goal was to identify challenges to advance in women’s rights due to the predominance of a conservative and patriarchal discourse and exchange experiences on the implementation of public policies in the Mount Lebanon’s region. On 28 November 2015, a fourth meeting was held in Chouf - Baakline, with the aim at increasing awareness among elected representatives and the media.

On 4 December 2015, a concluding meeting of this process of mobilization of equality actors was held in Beirut in partnership with the Municipality of Jbeil, the “Section Femmes du Mouvement du futur”, the Smart Centre and the Lebanese Commission against violence against women. The goal was to share the experiences of institutional, associations, researchers, and the media partners to promote women's participation in political life. The strong points of this symposium were the interventions of civil society and politicians. Recommendations were made regarding the need to amend laws to allow better women’s representation in decision-making bodies, change the system of social values, and fight against violence against women. Furthermore, considering domestic work as part of GDP and make women more visible in the media are objectives that have set among different equality actors.

The establishment of an alliance will be effective and trainings: on discriminatory laws on women; and on awareness and advocacy methodologies will be developed.
