On 19 November 2015, 47 people gathered in Oran to address the issue of violence against women. Among them, there were representatives of social services and the media, lawyers, researchers in anthropology, sociology and history, as well as representatives of humanitarian and human rights organizations. This workshop was organized by the l’Association nationale Femmes en communication (FEC) as a head of the pilot action to mobilize local actors in Algeria in 2015, within the framework of the Axis 1 "Strengthening the capacities of actors working for gender equality", of the project Women for the future in the Mediterranean, funded by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development and the project “Developing Women’s Empowerment”, labelled by the Union for the Mediterranean.
While recognizing the exemplary work of local associations in terms of reception and support of victims, the importance of involving the media in the fight against violence against women was emphasized. Media coverage of the workshop was a highlight with articles and interviews with the National President of FEC on the radio and private television.
After stressing the dramatic experience of victims as well as the absence of reception facilities and specific support structures, participants recognized the need for a close collaboration between institutions, local authorities, associations and the media in combating violence against women.
This platform is part of the Axis 1 "Strengthening the capacities of equality actors" of the Priority Solidarity Fund "Women for the future in the Mediterranean" funded by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and led by the European Institute of the Mediterranean, in the framework of the project “Developing Women's Empowerment” labelled by the Union for the Mediterranean.
