On 6 September 2013 the Euro-Mediterranean Women's Foundation was constituted with the aim of promoting women's emancipation and empowerment and strengthening their role in the Euro-Mediterranean region. The new organisation, based at the headquarters of the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) in Barcelona, will carry out the project "Developing women's empowerment", supported and endorsed by the Union for the Mediterranean.
The founders of the new institution are six organisations from civil society and the academic world as well as institutions, namely: two women's associations (the Forum Femmes Méditerranée based in France and the Fédération de la Ligue Démocratique des Droits des Femmes based in Morocco); two research and training centres on gender (the Réseau universitaire et scientifique euro-méditerranéen sur le genre et les femmes – RUSEMEG – and the Center of Arab Women for Training and Research – CAWTAR –, based in Tunisia); and, finally, the French state and the IEMed.
Along with the constitution ceremony held at the IEMed, the Foundation was presented on the occasion of the 3rd Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial Conference on Women, held in Paris on 11 and 12 September 2013.
