Within the global 16-day campaign, the Community Media Center (CMC) and the Amal Coalition to Combat Violence Against Women implemented a workshop on the Family Protection from Violence Law

Gaza - Community Media Center - December 2022

The Community Media Center CMC, in cooperation with the Amal Coalition to Combat Violence against Women, held a workshop entitled "The Family Protection from Violence Law" with the participation of a group of media professionals, lawyers and activists participating in CMC projects, and facilitating education workshops raising awareness about women’s rights and combating gender-based violence against women and girls.

This workshop is part of CMCs effort to raise community awareness about women’s rights and combating violence against them, to raise awareness about the importance of the Family Protection from Violence Law, and to pressure for the approval of a draft law on family protection from violence. It also falls within the activities of the 16 Days of International Campaign to End Gender-Based Violence against Women and Girls.

The workshop was moderated by lawyer Nourhan Al-Tabatibi, one of the participants in the CMC projects. She discussed the idea of a draft law on family protection from violence and the various stages it went through,  discussed the need to pass a law on family protection from violence, and touched on the reality of domestic violence in Palestine.

Al-Tabatibi noted the goal of the draft law, which is to preserve the family fabric of Palestinian society, to protect family members from all forms of domestic violence, to ensure that victims of domestic violence access to justice, taking into account the best interest of the victim, to rehabilitate and reintegrate them into society, and to hold accountable, punish and rehabilitate the aggressor and reintegrate him into society. Al-Tabatibi also presented the 52 articles included in the draft.

The CMC is a non-governmental organization operating in the Gaza Strip since 2007, seeking to develop the role of the media in dealing with societal issues and promoting the values of democracy, equality and a culture of human rights, with a focus on women and youth issues and highlighting them through various media means within human rights-based approach.
