The political participation of Jordanian women at the local level

10.05.2021 / Created by (EMWF)

In 2017, Building Bridges Association (BBA) prepared a field diagnosis entitled "Women’s Participation in Municipal Councils in Liwa Al Koura, Irbid", as a leader of one of the Local clusters for gender equality actors  © (cycle 1) in Jordan. The project, implemented by the Euro-Mediterranean Women’s Foundation with the support of the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) was part of Axis 1 "Strengthening the capacities of actors of equality ”of the“ Women of the future in the Mediterranean ”project financed by the Priority Solidarity Fund of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs.

This paper focuses on the gaps in participation between Jordanian women and men at the local level, as well as on the factors that limit the contribution of women to political life in the region of Irbid. The article, proposed by the Secretariat of the Euro-Mediterranean Women’s Foundation, is based on the diagnosis prepared by BBA as well as on documents published by some of the members of the EMWF and on critical material featured in the Foundation’s Documentation Centre.
