This guide addresses the issue of female genital mutilation (FGM), to inform trainees that FGM is a harmful practice and a form of violence against women and girls.
The manual focuses on unequal power relations between women and men and sees them as the root cause of FGM. This guide also allows trainees to recognize the role of gender discrimination in creating social expectations related to women’s bodies and sexuality. It also reviews the social, economic, cultural and institutional factors that preserve the practice of FGM. It analyzes the role of women, girls, boys and men as agents of change to abandon this practice, while being sources of resistance.
