The academic usage of the notion of empowerment in various fields (development, poverty, gender equality, etc.) do not always draw on the same conceptual framework. This article aims to summarize some of the advantages but also some limitations of the uses of the concept of women’s empowerment. The authors will attempt to answer the following questions: What are the strengths of the academic debate around the notion of women’s empowerment? Does not this concept remain surrounded by a conceptual blur? Have not the distances gradually widened between the academic uses of this notion and its uses in the sector of non-profit institutions?
