The book is divided into an introductory chapter presenting basic reflections on the alternative economy and its relation to the concept of social justice. It then presents a series of case studies on countries like Lebanon, Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt, and explores a number of experiences such as the Sarifa women’s knitting workshop in Lebanon, and the Women for living initiative in Fayoum in Egypt, in addition to two initiatives from Tunisia whose authors were seeking ways to be independent from the prevailing economic system that did not respond to the aspirations of people for social justice and work. These two initiatives (the Mamotex factory in Chebba, and the Association for the Protection of Jemna’s Oasis ) offer practical alternatives that respect the rights and dignity of individuals and push the state and society to recognize the capabilities of women or marginalized individuals.
