The first part of this research paper tackles the general economic and historical framework of the evolution of the alternative economy, while the second part highlights different patterns of social and solidarity economy as a model for the alternative economy and a solution to social and economic crises. It also provides number of definitions and initiatives to establish a social economy and solidarity, and stresses the role of trade unions, syndicates and human rights organizations in developing development alternatives and alternative laws, taking the Tunisian experience as a case study. The third and final part of the research discusses women’s empowering in the social and solidarity economy as a development alternative, and the different factors that influence their engagement in this type of economic activity.
