This diagnosis gives an overview of women’s participation in municipal councils in the region of Liwa Al Koura, in Irbid. It builds upon discussions and consultations with NGOs and local leaders, women members of municipal councils (elected or appointed) and women who had been candidates in municipal council elections. First, it examines the legislation and laws related to Jordanian women participation in politics. Then, it shows the administrative obstacles and the social and cultural challenges that women face as members of executive and local councils. It also analyses how the quota has impacted on women’s access to the national Parliament. Finally, the diagnosis provides recommendations for enhancing women’s presence in local governments, decision-making positions and political life in general.
