23.03.2017 / Created by (EMWF)

Article 522 of the Lebanese Penal Code is one of the most controversial issues regarding Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) legislations in Lebanon. It states that prosecution or execution of a penalty halts when the perpetrator of a rape, kidnapping, or statutory rape marries the person he has raped or kidnapped. This study aims to examine:

  1. The public awareness of Article 522; 2. The public attitude and perceptions towards SGBV in general and Article 522 in particular; 3. The public response towards the suggestion of repealing Article 522.

This study was part of a campaign on Article 522 of the Lebanese Penal Code in November 2016, aiming to change the narrative and legislative around SGBV, in order to recognize it as a crime, whether in or out of the marriage, and dissociating it from women’s honour.
