Women’s situation in Morocco 20 years after Beijing. Current situation and recommendations

Morocco has been an active participant in all the international conferences related to women’s rights: Mexico in 1975, Copenhagen in 1980, Nairobi in 1985 and Beijing in 1995. Therefore, the application of the road maps: The Nairobi Forward Looking Strategies for the Advancement of Women in 2000, the Beijing Platform, the Pekin Declaration and Program of Action. Since its previous review in 2010, Morocco has made significant progress with the regard to the normative, institutional and legislative frameworks, concerning the protection and the promotion of Human Rights and Women’s Rights. Indeed, Morocco approved in 2011 a new constitution which offers improvements in the field of equality and gender parity, including new institutional mechanisms of respect, human rights promotion in general and particularly regarding women’s rights. However, despite this progress, discriminations and women’s rights violations still remain both in terms of existing legislation, and of practices. Furthermore, the harmonization of these legislations with the new constitutional provisions and the commitments made by Moroccan government remains slow.
