This report analyses women’s human rights and gender equality in Syria. It was prepared within the framework of the project “Enhancing Equality between Men and Women in the Euromed Region (2008-2011)” and it examines the national legal context in this sector. Some themes covered are: the personal status law, the nationality law, and the penal code; women’s role and participation in decision-making; Syria´s position on international conventions and treaties, such as the CEDAW; and the national initiative on women´s rights and gender equality. The report thus defines priority fields of action to achieve more rights and empower women in Syria.
