Even with their strong presence during the uprisings started in 2011, women are still politically under-represented in the Arab countries.This article discusses the gender relations in the Arab world, and their misconception in the European Union.It emphasises the fact that to better understand the gender issue in the Arab world, the EU should pursue a broader regional gender-based discourse. In this way it would eventually help the frameworks of partnerships and neighbourhood policies that aim at the promotion of human rights and democracy, explicitly including gender-democracy.
