This report sheds light on women and girls safe spaces, which is a key strategy for the protection and empowerment of women and girls affected by the Syrian crisis. A safe space is a formal or informal place where women and girls feel physically and emotionally safe. The term ‘safe,’ in the present context, refers to the absence of trauma, excessive stress, violence (or fear of violence), or abuse.
This document provides an overview of what key principles should be followed when establishing such spaces in humanitarian and post-crisis contexts. The report provides examples and practical tools, checklist, and assessment questions.
This platform is part of the Axis 1 "Strengthening the capacities of equality actors" of the Priority Solidarity Fund "Women for the future in the Mediterranean" funded by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and led by the European Institute of the Mediterranean, in the framework of the project “Developing Women's Empowerment” labelled by the Union for the Mediterranean.
