The Charter was drafted within a project by the Council of European Municipalities and Regions. It is aimed at European local and regional authorities who are encouraged to publically take a stand on the principle of gender equality and to implement the commitments defined in the charter in their area. Its fundamental principles include the elimination of all stereotypes, attitudes and prejudices linked to gender and gender mainstreaming in all activities of local and regional authorities

This platform is part of the Axis 1 "Strengthening the capacities of equality actors" of the Priority Solidarity Fund "Women for the future in the Mediterranean" funded by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and led by the European Institute of the Mediterranean, in the framework of the project “Developing Women's Empowerment” labelled by the Union for the Mediterranean.
