The Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial Conference held in Marrakech in 2009 has explored concrete actions to strengthen the role of women in society. In their previous meeting in Istanbul in 2006, the ministers had established a five-year joint action framework so that men and women can enjoy the same economic, social, cultural and political rights. The Marrakech Conference is a decisive stage in the process started in Istanbul as it established a monitoring mechanism aimed at detecting the progress achieved by governments. The ministers pointed out the importance of adopting a participatory approach involving all partners.
