This report examines the working conditions of female and male domestic workers in eight countries that host significant numbers of them, such as Lebanon where there are an estimated 200,000. Migrants' domestic work is an important source of employment for women from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Nepal, India and Ethiopia. It examines the progress achieved in terms of their legal protection under labour laws; the rights for protection of domestic workers; the reform of immigration "sponsorship" systems that contribute to abuse; the response by police and courts to physical and sexual violence; and the conditions in which civil society and trade unions organize.
This platform is part of the Axis 1 "Strengthening the capacities of equality actors" of the Priority Solidarity Fund "Women for the future in the Mediterranean" funded by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and led by the European Institute of the Mediterranean, in the framework of the project “Developing Women's Empowerment” labelled by the Union for the Mediterranean.
