This document aims to analyse the impact of the presence of young children on parents' employment and their effect on working hours and continuity in employment in 14 European countries. The findings show that maternity has an important negative effect on the employment of women in terms of part-time work and inactivity. For parents, the findings differ notably from one country to another. In general, paternity increases the probability of employment but has no significant effect on the number of hours worked.
