The Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) is the main international legal instrument to make recognition of the exercise of the fundamental women' s rights advance in the political, economic, social, cultural, civil and domestic fields. Gender equality, non-discrimination and the protection of human rights are the main general principles of the European Union; moreover, all EU Member States form part of CEDAW. This study analyses the common points and differences between the EU legislation on gender equality and CEDAW, and approaches the challenges to accelerate the full implementation of CEDAW within the EU legal and political framework.
