This treaty was adopted by the Council of Europe on 11 May 2011 in Istanbul. It establishes a binding legal framework at a European level to protect women against all forms of violence; prevent, combat and eliminate violence against women, including domestic violence; and contribute to eliminating all forms of discrimination against women. The Convention established a specific monitoring mechanism ("GREVIO") to ensure the effective implementation of its provisions by the parties, namely the Council of Europe Member States and other signatories. It came into force on 1 August 2014.
