From 3th to 12th of May 2019, the photography exhibition "Dones trencant barreres. Transformant les ciutats mediterrànies" ("Women breaking barriers. Transforming Mediterranean cities"), produced by the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) and the Euro-Mediterranean Women’s Foundation (FFEM), will travel to a new location: the city of Manresa, close to Barcelona, Spain.
The 10 images and stories part of the exhibition will be displayed within the framework of the Festival Internacional de Cinema Social de Catalunya - CLAM 2019 (International Social Film Festival of Catalunya), dedicated to the promotion of films focused on human rights and solidarity. Women’s rights are not an exception in this context. Actually, the defense of gender equality is one of the main topics this year: films like "Female pleasure" by Barbara Miller (Switzerland, 2018), and other parallel activities like the seminar "Sex and film" address this issue directly. Check out the entire programme here.
This photo exhibition is the result of the contest "Powerful women: Breaking stereotypes in the Euro-Mediterranean region": the ten finalist images show the stories of exceptional and courageous women who struggle to conquer the public space and participate fully in the life of their cities. The stories, that are an essential complement to the photographs, will be displayed in both Catalan and English.
In the context of the exhibition, a discussion will be held on May 10 under the name of "Dones excepcionals: trencant estereotips de gènere" ("Outstanding women: breaking gender stereotypes"). Susana Cereijo, from the Euro-Mediterranean Gender Equality Programme of the IEMed (founding member and headquarters of the FFEM), will explain how the photo exhibition was born, highlight the important connection between art and feminism, and talk about the situation of women and feminist movements in the Southern Mediterranean.
Both events are free! More information is available in the festival website and programme below.
This platform is part of the Axis 1 "Strengthening the capacities of equality actors" of the Priority Solidarity Fund "Women for the future in the Mediterranean" funded by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and led by the European Institute of the Mediterranean, in the framework of the project “Developing Women's Empowerment” labelled by the Union for the Mediterranean.
