Dear partners, and friends +
As part of the "Tunisie en Mouvements" program supported by Wallonia-Brussels International and on the occasion of International Women’s Rights Day, the Vigilance Committee for Democracy in Tunisia - asbl will invite Ms Leila Toubel to represent her play "YAKOUTA" at the Cité Miroir in Liège, on Saturday March 12, 2022 at 8 p.m., which will be followed by a debate with the Tunisian artist.
"YAKOUTA": A heart touching plea for all women in the world and against the violence they face.
In a setting reduced to the essentials which forms the walls of her solitude, a woman is locked up after having been beaten to death by her companion. Beatings, insults and injuries are part of her daily life, but this time he has sworn to end her life, leaving her to die of hunger and thirst, suffocate from her scandal and suffocate from her grief. He will gouge out her eyes, this accursed woman who soiled and trampled her honor in the mud. The husband has just discovered that his wife, when she was only 16, gave birth to a girl born under X, abandoned her in front of a mosque and that after twenty-four long years of separation, she was about to find her.
After Solwen and Hourya, Yakouta is a new challenge to speak, through the damaged body and the ransacked soul of a woman, of our sexist and abject societies. Yakouta is the story of a thousand and one women, a cry against omerta, a candle that lights up dark rooms and an echo of stifled tears. It is a poignant plea for all women in the world and against the violence they face. The performance will be followed by a discussion with the audience.
